Hewn Slojd Knife
This is the perfect spoon carving knife.
The Background
I have learned that the best tools are made by the people who know best how to use them. After a decade of spoon carving, I know what I like in a knife. The growing popularity of spoon carving has lead to increasing difficulty in acquiring good green woodworking tools. Covid-19 and Brexit have further exacerbated the problem. Why not make my own then?
The Blade
A classic slojd shape with a high carbon alloy, good heat treatment, an accurate scandi grind and a high polish. That’s every thing you need. I’ve also rounded and polished the spine for that extra bit of comfort.
Blade length: 80mm
The Handle
The handles are hand carved by myself out of strong, dense apple wood. I’ve combined the features of my favourite knife handles. I’ve also hand carved mine for some extra grip and loads of extra character. They’re a little longer than a typical slojd handle which I find useful. It feels great in the hand. There’s a nice solid brass bolster for a little bit of bling. These blades have a very long tang, almost the full length of the handle, for strength.
The Sheath
The leather sheath is made in Finland, in the traditional Sami style, with a twisted leather dangle loop. There is a plastic insert to protect the leather from being cut by the knife in the long term. Every sheath has a nice snug fit. The knife won’t fall out accidentally.
Classes
You will need a straight slojd knife for Knife Skills 0, Knife Skills 1 and Knife Skills 2. Any slojd knife will be suitable for those classes. At the moment, I have two available: The Finnish Slojd Knife and The Hewn Slojd Knife. Either one will be fine for the classes. You don’t need both
